Rwanda: the Gift of a Photo

Land of a Thousand Hills Coffee and their Do Good initiative are genuinely dedicated to personal relationships with their coffee growing partners. In a Facebook post, Do Good director Karen Akridge Houghton shows a boy receiving a copy of a photo I shot of him the last time I was there. Karen, and Land of a Thousand Hills Coffee have made a long-term commitment to the people of Rwanda where they work. Their investment is neither fly-by-night or short-term focused. The receiving of a photo may be a small thing in our media-saturated lifestyle, but for this child, I am sure this act of kindness by Karen will be remembered for a long time.

Gary it will be treasured. Both time I have been in Rwanda I have made sure to print off at least one photo of everyone I photographed. Even the adults prize the photos as it is not something they usually have. The important thing is if you promise someone a photo to deliver on your promise. People look forward with great expectation — adults and children — to receiving a print and too often they are promised one and it never arrives. THis applies to people you photograph in Canada and US, or on the other side of the world. People have come to expect disappointment and when you deliver even a simple print they truly appreciate the thoughtfulness. The last time we went to Rwanda,
I brought a small portable Canon printer so I could print each night and personally hand out as many of the photos as possible. Good for you. Randy
