Sometimes we think we have to buy THINGS to solve problems. What about the problem of no desks, no chairs, no pencils or paper? How can these young children in a rural school in Zimbabwe learn to write?  They use chalk on the floor to copy what the teacher writes on the blackboard. Obviously, it would be better if they had all those THINGS, but they temporarily solved a huge problem in a creative way.

Nice piece, Gary. Goes to show what the human spirit does to overcome obstacles. Little boy in blue is a great image!

Thanks Mark. Africa has a lot of problems, but the people also have a lot of creativity and ingenuity. Thanks again for taking the time to look. Everyone’s time is so limited these days.

  4. I have a similar photo on my site, but of a teacher teaching computer class with chalk and blackboard. Not nearly on your level, but tells a story …http://desireeadaway.com/storytelling-no-campfire-required/

I love the quote under your photo, “It’s really hard to teach kids computers skills when you have no electricity in your classrooms. This teacher, like teachers around the world, worked with what he had… chalkboard and chalk.” Good story. Thanks 4 sharing.

That top photo is amazing. The whole story It’s so typical of developing countries and the way they approach and solve problems. A great example of using what you got and making it count.

Very emotive and compelling images – especially the top one. Thanks for sharing. I am working on something at the moment that seems to be right up your street. I will make touch with you in a couple of weeks when I have bit more structure and certainty around it – but will email you directly.

    Matt,

Thanks for looking! The school would like new desks and chairs but I love the creativity they use to make up for their lack.
